COVID-19 vaccine code structure and administration codes

With the great news of introducing COVID-19 vaccines to the world, CPT developed a new coding structure to identify the coronavirus vaccines as well as the administration codes unique to each such vaccine and dose.

A covid-19 vaccine is any of several different vaccine technologies intended to provide acquired immunity against COVID-19. These vaccines are made by different companies: One is being developed by the Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech and another by the biotechnology firm Moderna, in partnership with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Vaccine technology:

Both the Pfizer and Moderna use technology known as mRNA, which introduces into the body a messenger sequence that contains the genetic instructions for the vaccinated person’s own cells to produce the antigens and generate an immune response.

Coronavirus Vaccine code structure:

The new coding structure establishes a range of codes, starting with code 91300 that are specific to COVID-19 vaccine products and a new series of alphanumeric codes (0001A, 0002A, 0011A, 0012A) used to report the vaccine administration.

Vaccine codes: 91300, 91301

Vaccine administration codes: 0001A, 0002A, 0011A, 0012A

Pfizer SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and administration: 91300, 0001A, 0002A

CPT 91300 is used to report Pfizer SARS-CoV-2 vaccine for intramuscular use. Its administration codes are 0001A and 0002A which includes the specific vaccine product, the dosage schedule (first dose or second dose) and counselling when performed. Let’s see below the breakdown of the codes:

91300: The last two digits 00 in this code represent the specific vaccine as Pfizer vaccine.

0001A and 0002A: The second and third digits in both the administration codes is 00 which specify the vaccine product(Pfizer) and the fourth digit represents the dosage schedule and “A” denotes administration code.

Moderna SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and administration: 91301, 0011A, 0012A

CPT 91301 is used to report Moderna SARS-CoV-2 vaccine for intramuscular use. Its administration codes are 0011A and 0012A which includes the specific vaccine product, the dosage schedule (first dose or second dose) and counselling when performed. Let’s see below the breakdown of the codes:

91301: The last two digits 01 in this code represent the specific vaccine as Moderna vaccine.

0011A and 0012A: The second and third digits in both the administration codes is 01 which specify the vaccine product(Moderna) and the fourth digit represents the dosage schedule and “A” denotes administration code.
