Only few changes are noted in the genital system of 2021 code set. In male genital system, you have only one new code added without any revised or deleted codes. In female genital system, one new add-on code is added and two codes are deleted.
Male genital system:
A single code (55880) is being added to the male genital system to report high intensity-focus ultrasound (HIFU) ablation of the malignant prostate tissue via the transrectal approach. HIFU is a minimally invasive technique that utilizes high-energy ultrasound waves on a single location, thereby elevating the local tissue temperature. This increased tissue temperature is suggested to kill the excess prostate tissue and can be repeated if necessary.
Currently HCPCS code C9747 (Ablation of prostate, transrectal, high intensity focused ultrasound (hifu), including imaging guidance) is used to report HIFU procedure. However this code does not specify an indication beyond the ablation of prostate. Therefore a new CPT 55880 is added in 2021 that describes the HIFU procedure specific for prostate cancer.
55880: Ablation of malignant prostate tissue, transrectal, with high intensity– focused ultrasound (HIFU), including ultrasound guidance
Female genital system:
Two codes 57112 and 58293 are deleted from the female genital system. These codes represent complex combination procedures and due to its low utilization, deleted without any replacement within the 2021 code set.
New add-on code +57465 is introduced in this chapter to describe computer-aided mapping of the cervix during colposcopy procedures.
Happy learning! Happy Coding!
