Respiratory system code changes 2021

This blog emphasizes about the respiratory system code changes 2021 and the great news is that there are only few changes in this section. It’s on high priority that every coder should learn about the changes in each section of the CPT for accurate coding thus eliminating the chances of denials.

Two new codes were added and one code was deleted in the Respiratory section of the CPT manual book.

New codes:

30468: Repair of nasal valve collapse with subcutaneous/submucosal lateral wall implant(s)

This code is added to report the repair of a nasal valve collapse using minimally invasive technique to open the collapsed valve with absorbable lateral wall implants.

A nasal valve collapse is a weakness or narrowing of the nasal valve. It is most commonly caused by nose surgery or any prior trauma to the nose.

Treatment:

Treatment of nasal valve collapse includes the use of both the surgical and non-surgical interventions as listed below:

Non-surgical interventions:

  • Adhesive strips applied externally across the nose
  • Use of nasal dilators or cones or other devices

Surgical interventions:

  • Use of surgical grafting techniques such as cartilaginous autograft/allografts or permanent synthetic grafts.

Minimally invasive technique:

Absorbable Nasal Implants support the lateral nasal cartilages and proposed as an alternative to more invasive grafting procedures in patients with nasal obstruction.

Example: LATERA implant

LATERA implant: It is the only commercially available absorbable nasal implant for the treatment of nasal valve collapse. The procedure involves a puncture like incision and will fix the implant using a needle-based delivery system.

Currently we use CPT code 30999 (unlisted procedure, nose) and HCPCS code (Repair of nasal vestibular lateral wall stenosis with implants(s) for the LATERA implants. The FY2021 CPT Code list has introduced a new code 30468 to report the implant services.

32408: Core needle biopsy, lung or mediastinum, percutaneous, including imaging guidance, when performed.

The new code 32408 is added to report the lung biopsy procedure that bundles imaging guidance in its code description. The existing code 32405 (percutaneous needle biopsy of lung or mediastinum) has been deleted from its section as the code lacks the imaging guidance in its description.
